Arlington CTE Advisory Committee Statewide Awards

The Arlington Public Schools Career, Technical and Adult Education Advisory Committee received multiple awards in the Commonwealth of Virginia's statewide Creating Excellence Awards.

The following Arlington programs were recognized:

  • The Marketing Program @Wakefield HS in the category of Exemplary Secondary Program Award.
  • The CTAE Advisory Committee in the category of Secondary Advisory Committee Award.
  • The ACE Mentoring Program in the category of Secondary Business and Industry Partnership Award.

Virginia Space Grant Consortium CyberSecurity+ Exam Preparation Series

Virginia Space Grant Consortium’s free, online Security+ Exam Preparation Series is now complete and available for Virginia’s students.  The series has 14 one-hour sessions, led by Dr. Michael Mann and recorded with student engagement, that use practice questions from the question bank developed by the Virginia Cyber Range. Registrants also have access to the Cyber Range’s full bank of test questions and answers.  

Each program is bookmarked for ease of access to topics of particular interest to the student. Closed captioning and downloadable transcripts are available for each program in the series. The series is available at:  http://vsgc.odu.edu/securityplus

AFCEA Recognized for Engineering Hackathon

 

AFCEAN of the Month, April 2023

Rockbridge Shenandoah Chapter and Belvoir Chapter AFCEANS

This Month AFCEA International is pleased to recognize two chapters from two different regions who collaborated on a Virtual Elementary School Hackathon for fifth graders. The Rockbridge Shenandoah Chapter and Belvoir Chapter hosted this multiday event in December 2022. The event built on a framework used by Fort Belvoir and included six elementary schools across Virginia located in Rockbridge County and at Quantico Crossroads Elementary and Fort Belvoir Elementary.

Special recognition goes to the following individuals who made the event an amazing success;

  • AFCEA Rockbridge Shenandoah Chapter: Jeff Thompson, Mattie Smith, Jim Egenrieder, Tamra Lipscomb and Nancy Rowland.
  • AFCEA Belvoir Chapter: Brendan Burke, Gus Muller, Anya Kasischke, Tom Perry, Dawn Atwood, Eleanor Sigrest, Carlos Embury and Troy Benesch.
  • Others who were critical to the event were Beth Kelley, Lt. Ryan Quarry, USCG, Paige Owens and Tiffanie Ploeger.

The theme was a space-based mission called “Engineer the Planet.” Students played as fictional BASA (Belvoir AFCEA Space Alliance) coders to conduct a mission to Planet X and

Confirmed - STEM Expo (Robotics, AI, Virtual Reality, Physical Computing, Careers)

The Northern Virginia STEM Learning Ecosystem and Virginia Tech in the DC Area want to invite you to participate in a STEM-focused community outreach emphasizing  Physical Computing, Robotics, Mobile App design, and more.

  • Saturday, March 25,  9am to 1pm
  • Northern Virginia Center
    (W. Falls Church Metro)
  • No charges, fees, admission costs, or
    parking costs for exhibitors or participants
  • Proposed target ages for participants is
    age 8 to adult

We are still welcoming our collaborators, and inquiries from others.  

We hope to do this again in the Fall, probably excluding the messy (and expensive to clean) K-3 things of past years, and then create an annual event leading to when our Northern Virginia Center programs migrate to the new Innovation Campus scheduled to open in Fall 2024.
