CALLING ALL INNOVATORS!

If you are a middle or high school student who is interested in STEM, please be a part of our virtual 2021 Virginia Tech D.C. Global STEM Expo! Read more below for details.

Overview

The purpose of this Expo, hosted by the Virginia Tech DC Metro Region STEM Education and Workforce Development Labs (hereafter, VT-DC STEM Labs),  is to inspire U.S. and international school-aged students to share innovative STEM projects or products for recognition, feedback, exposure to new opportunities relevant to their interests. The Expo provides schools with a more inclusive, innovation-focused complement to science fairs, with feedback from mentors, community members, and others instead of judges.

Participants

US and international middle and high school students, in teams or as individuals, who are interested in STEM careers and college programs, or simply wish to present their discoveries.

Opportunities for Participants

  1. Share your ideas, innovations, projects and products with professors, industry experts, and other participants;
  2. Learn from other participants with similar interests and varied perspectives, and give feedback; and
  3. Learn about our Virginia Tech STEM Lab in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area and our regional and international support for exploring technical careers, college majors, and projects involving Microelectronics, Robotics, Smart Cities, IoT, Self-Driving (Autonomous) Vehicles, Remote-Operated Vehicles, Efficient and Sustainable Energy, Environmental Monitoring, Agricultural Automation, Social Engineering, and others.

Projects involving experiments with human subjects or animals cannot be accepted.

Schedule and Requirements

  1. Registration period
    • Early registration (free) December 14, 2020 – February 1, 2021 (extended!);
    • Regular Registration (now waived): February 1 – March 15, 2021;
      (Once your registration form is confirmed, we will send you the Submission Form, and Contact Information Sheet and Media Release.)
  2. Submission periodJanuary 19 – March 15, 2021;
    (We strongly encourage submissions in English to ensure the greatest number of viewers for your project.)
    A separate Submission Form will be required for each project including:
    • Project title;
    • Brief introduction of your team (or self); 
    • Description of the project, including the reason for developing it, overview of the design, its functions and features, future applications and further improvements (if any), and materials, software and tools used.
    • A short video (2 to 5 minutes) that includes the information above and anything else you want viewers to learn.
    • Contact Information Sheet and Media Release: one per each participant.
  3. Review and Feedback periodMarch 20 – April 5, 2021;
  4. Final Presentations/Awards and Recognitions Ceremonies (live): April 16-17, 2021;

We encourage innovative projects reflecting any of the 17 career clusters, especially the newly recognized Energy career cluster:

Project Formats

We welcome and encourage your research and projects in a wide variety of products or formats, which could include AutoCAD files, performances, 3D models, functional prototypes, web sites, printable brochures, digital music, videos, multimedia projects, and more.  Regardless of the format, we will request a short video presentation of your work when you submit your project according to the schedule above.  You may also submit more than one project/product or serve on multiple teams.

Recognitions

Participants and their projects will be recognized based on their individual qualities, innovation, application to real-world challenges or needs, utility, and other qualities to be determined.
