JOB SUMMARY:
The NASA Pathways Intern Program provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and
gain meaningful developmental work experience.

This position is located in the Systems Integration and Test Branch, within the Engineering Directorate. The Intern will focus in the area of contamination control and planetary protection for NASA Langley space flight projects. Work with an experienced engineer to gain both analytical and laboratory experience. Gain experience quantifying contamination environments in the ground, test, launch, and on-orbit phases of flight. Understand the effects of contamination on space flight products. Areas of interest should include chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, materials engineering, molecular mass transport, or physics. Intern will be heavily involved in gaining hands-on experience in the laboratory with an emphasis of thermal vacuum testing and contamination control techniques.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • You must be a U.S. citizen
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.9 or higher on a scale of 4.0.
  • Must work at least 640 hours prior to completion of degree course work.
  • Male applicants must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must complete background investigation.


DUTIES:
This position is part of the NASA Pathways Intern Program which is a formal training program.You may be required to perform rotational assignments in various organizations.

The Intern will primarily work in the area of contamination control and planetary protection. Intern will focus on increasing knowledge and expertise in the subject areas of particulate contamination, space environments, clean room operations, molecular dynamics, material outgassing, and biological microbial reduction. Intern will work with senior engineers to gain direct hands on experience in a laboratory environment to create analytical models, develop tests, and interpret data. Intern will gain wide exposure to a variety of analytical tools and laboratory test equipment for meeting spacecraft contamination and planetary protection requirements. Intern may be asked to work independently to create and execute a number of developmental tests in the subject area, and document the results.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
The following major(s) are required:
• Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Sciences or Physics
be eligible for this position, you must:
• Be a U.S. citizen;
• Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment;
• Be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in an accredited educational institution;
• Be enrolled at least half-time as defined by your educational institution; and
• Have and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.90 (on a 4.00 scale).
This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will also be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factor is either accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a Master's or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Sciences or Physics.

Degrees in Engineering must be from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Degrees from ABET-accredited colleges or universities must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of, accreditation. Degrees in other acceptable majors need only be from colleges or universities accredited by recognized accrediting organizations.
